Road to the North American Junior & Young Rider Championships

The 2013 North American Junior & Young Rider Show Jumping Championships presented by USHJA as part of the 2013 Adequan FEI North American Junior & Young Riders Championships begins July 17 with five days of intense competition among the elite young athletes from around the globe, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Columbia and Guatemala to name a few.

As the competition approaches we asked some of the competitors to introduce themselves and mounts, as well as share their insights - their hopes and what NAJYRC brings to their riding.

Among the U.S. riders competing is Maggie Drysch of El Dorado Hills, CA, who only recently began showing in the Junior Jumper sections with a new mount.  She has chosen the NAJYRC as the swan song for her junior years.

"This is my first year competing at NAJYRC and I am extremely excited. My parents gave me the choice between NAJYRC and going to indoors with my equitation horse, and I chose NAJYRC! I love the team format of NAJYRC and the opportunity of going to Kentucky and representing our zone as a team. Considering I have only been in the junior jumper ring this year, I would have to say my biggest accomplishment is being able to make the NAJYRC team for my zone!"

Emerging Athletes Program 2014 Host Facility Applications Opening Soon!

The Emerging Athletes Program, presented by Dover Saddlery, is well under way for 2013, but the Task Force is looking for host facilities for 2014.

Throughout all levels of the Emerging Athletes Program, USHJA works in partnership with the host facilities to produce quality Regional Clinics. USHJA offers 10 Regional Clinics in areas where an appropriate host facility applies and that best serve the demographic population and geographic balance of those interested in participating in the program. Regional Clinics are four days in length with 24 riders and their horses being invited to attend.

The host facility does not have to be a show facility to be considered. Private farms, boarding facilities, universities, prep schools, et cetera may apply, as long as the facility can meet USHJA/EAP requirements.

Applications open August 1, 2013 and close on October 1, 2013.

If interested in becoming a host of this exciting program in 2014, please visit our website for more information regarding the host facility requirements.

To learn more about the Emerging Athletes Program please visit the USHJA web site or contact Carrie Vaught at (859) 225-6703.

Emerging Athletes Program Continues to Shine

Dover

The 2013 Emerging Athletes Program, presented by Dover Saddlery, continues to garner high praise from participants and clinicians alike. The Colorado Horse Park in Parker, CO, was the third of ten EAP Regional Clinic locales and welcomed 17 enthusiastic riders to the in-depth four-day clinic with two of the equestrian community's top experts, lead clinician Cynthia Hankins and stable manager Nanci Snyder.

Participants in the Regional Clinics are instructed on flatwork, gymnastics, related distances and course work, intensive stable-management curriculum and demonstrations from specialists such as USHJA Contributing Sponsor, Nutrena, on proper nutrition and conditioning.

From day one Cynthia Hankins emphasized, "You can't rest on the laurels of natural talent."  Her lessons going forward helped students understand the gravity of that statement and grow as horsemen.

Wendy Bates of West Jordan, UT, whose daughter Elizabeth was in attendance shared her view, "I love this program. It gives riders a chance to learn from people whom they otherwise wouldn't have a chance to learn from."

Elizabeth added, "I really enjoyed the EAP. It was an experience that I will not forget. I have not had the opportunities that a lot of the girls there have had, and I was very grateful for the experience. Being able to get some insight from Cynthia and Nancy was extremely beneficial.  I am excited to be able to take these things home and continue to improve as a rider and a horseman. I can't express how grateful I am to all involved in this program, and all the knowledge that they shared."

Trainer Certification Program Offers Educational Options

Trainer Certification Program applicants have two exciting opportunities to fulfill the educational component of their TCP application:

Attend a TCP Clinic: Each TCP Clinic features at least one clinician over multiple days, who, using the principles of the American Forward Riding System, educates members on teaching skills. Check out the TCP Clinic Calendar for a list of upcoming TCP Clinics throughout the country.

Complete the Online Trainer Certification Course: In  response to USHJA member input that the educational requirement for the Trainer Certification Program be more affordable and easily accessible, USHJA partnered with EquestrianCoach.com to offer TCP applicants an online educational option. The cost of the Online Trainer Certification Course is $200, which includes a complimentary 6-month subscription of EquestrianCoach.com. This gives TCP applicants access to Equestrian Coach's extensive library of videos in addition to the TCP course materials.

Markel Insurance Company is proud to sponsor the Trainer Certification Program. Please visit their website to learn more about what they can do for you.

Contact Carrie Vaught at (859) 225-6703 for more information about the TCP and these educational opportunities.
