National Equestrian Programs

USEF High School Equestrian Athlete Program - offer USEF members (grades 9-12) specially designed emblems (like Varsity letters) and pins.

Varsity Equestrian

University of Colorado Equestrian Club: Active student organized club (40+ members) involved with competing in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. The club provides opportunities for club members to learn horsemanship skills and take riding lessons. Practice Locations: English- Fall River Farm (directions), Western- TBA. The UC Equestrian Team competes in the IHSA: Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. Membership Requirements:
1. Be a full-time, fee-paying student in good standing at CU.
2. Pay Club dues of $75 + 5 fundraisers ($50 each) per semester.
3. Take minimum number of lessons per semester for each discipline planning to show in (5 in fall, 4 in spring)

University of Denver Club Equestrian Team welcomes students of all riding abilities from beginner to more advanced. The team is a member of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA), which includes colleges and universities from all over the country. Our region is composed of twelve teams from several surrounding states. The team travels usually two weekends of the year and hosts a show of their own on different weekends. Club members that qualify at the end of the year have an opportunity to participate in regional, zone, and national competitions. The locations of these events change yearly.
Members ride twice a week throughout the academic year, with trainer Molly Rinedollar. The mission of the Club Equestrian Team is to allow students to be able to gain confidence both on and around horses. National Jr. PHA Awards - Scholarship Award
This Scholarship will be awarded to an active member of the Junior PHA. He or she must be one who has shown interest and good sportsmanship in any aspect of the horse industry, and has the ability to benefit from Professional training.
The Award is to be used by said Junior for riding lessons with a Professional Horseman of his choice, providing the Professional is a member in good standing of the PHA.
The process to be used by each Junior Chapter to qualify for this Award is as follows:

1. Juniors may nominate any Junior member they feel worthy.
2. Juniors to hand into the Junior Advisor or President a brief resume of the person they are nominating.
3. Nominations will be considered by a committee consisting of the four Junior Officers, two Professionals and two Associates (to include the President and the Junior Advisor); the other two left to the discretion of the President.
4. Each Chapter may nominate one Junior for every twenty-five members or fraction thereof to the National for consideration.
5. The nominations to be sent by November 1st to the National Junior chairman for consideration.
6. Each chapter is encouraged to give a small scholarship to its local nominee if he or she is not the National Winner.

At the National Level

National Professional Horseman's Association
The Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance from a fund established for children of Professional Members or Professional Members of more than two years who are enrolled in an approved school for the advancement of their education beyond the elementary level. Life Associate and Life Professional membership dues are automatically applied to the Scholarship fund and are tax deductible. Zone 4 Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) College Scholarships
IEA Zone 4 offers $2250 in college scholarships to college bound seniors each year. Seniors must complete a three part essay which is then judged by an ivy league college recruitment specialist. The top three winners receive $1,000, $750, and $500 respectively. IEA Zone 4 includes the same states as the USHJA/USEF Zone 4 - Zone 4 covers Alabama, Florida, Gerogia, Mississippi, Tennessee and South Carolina. The CPHA Foundation offers 5 educational scholarships annually for CPHA Professionals who are working students or to children of CPHA Professionals. The scholarships are for $2000.00 and the applications are due by April 1st of each year. The application can be downloaded from the Foundation website or access the form directly. Georgetown College Equine Scholars Program is a unique way for students to pair their college education with their passion for horses. We offer scholarships for all eligible students and we’ll also match any approved horse industry scholarship they receive up to $1,000 (for example, if they get a $1,000 scholarship from the USPC, it will be worth $2,000 at Georgetown if they’re accepted into the program). Michigan

Michigan Hunter Jumper Association (MHJA) is pleased to sponsor a $1000 educational scholarship open to MHJA riders who are high school seniors and have been accepted or enrolled in an accredited college, university, or technical school. Applications will be accepted from September through July 31ST and must be postmarked on or before July 31st. Portfolios must be complete and materials will not be accepted after due date. We are seeking riders who exemplify good character and horsemanship. Applicants will be asked to submit the following:

1. A one page essay titled "How Horses Have Influenced My Life"
2. Copy of high school transcript.
3. Do you have a college fund in place?
4. Do you qualify for financial aid?
5. Community service contributions
6. Extra curricular activities and interests
7. Letters of Recommendation
8. How long have you been a member of MHJA
9. Completed MHJA Application

The scholarship funds will be mailed to the school of your choice upon notice of acceptance and enrollment. A certificate of scholarship will be awarded to the winning applicant at the Nov. Awards Banquet.

New York

LIPHA Scholarship Award

One of the primary goals of the LIPHA is education. In line with this goal, the LIPHA is proud to announce that it will offer two scholarships, each valued at $1000.00, to two graduating high school seniors who have been Junior PHA members for at least two years.
The winners may only use the scholarship to pay for academic fees, and may not use it to purchase riding equipment or to pay show entry fees and related expenses. Candidates must submit their application by May 31st to be considered for the scholarship. All applications received after that date will be returned. In addition to filling out and sending an application, the follow is also required:

  • Candidates must be scheduled to graduate from high school prior to June 30th of the academic year.
  • Candidates must be a Junior PHA member for at least two calendar years prior to the awarding of the scholarship.
  • Write an essay not to exceed 500 words indicating why he/she should receive the scholarship, what it will be used for and how it will further his/her career.
  • Supply two letters of recommendation supporting his/her level of motivation and probability for success in his/her chosen profession.

North Carolina

The North Carolina Hunter Jumper Association has the Norah Morris Memorial Scholarship, which began in 2008. The NCHJA also has a scholarship at NC State Vet School ,which is given each year to at least one deserving equine vet student at NC State.

Ohio

Tiffin University offers scholarships and pays for 2 weekly lessons, membership fees, and entry fees for all of its riders. The only responsibility financially that the students have is their clothing.

Oregon

Oregon Hunter & Jumper Association offers assistance to qualifying junior equestrians. Contact President, Trish Helmer.

Pennsylvania

Eastern Pennsylvania PHA Scholarships

The EPPHA offers monetary scholarships for secondary education (college/graduate school) to deserving members. Scholarships are available to children whose parent(s) are professional horsemen and women (EPPHA Scholarship) and to children whose parent(s) are not professional horsemen and women (Jack Trainor Scholarship and Barbara J. Stock Scholarship). We also offer the Bill Hoffman Scholarship to a deserving member for use towards a horse-related event (i.e., clinic). Progressive Show Jumping Scholarships- Pony Medal and Junior Medal. This scholarship program rewards the year end winners of the PSJ Junior and Pony medal finals. Each winner may use their $500 scholarship award towards either equestrian improvement, academic advancement (an accredited institution) or a combination of both. Winners must submit their request for funds to be transferred in writing within six months of their win. All checks will be made payable to the equestrian program or the academic institution. Virginia

The Allie Miller Memorial Riding Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship donated from the VHSA Foundation and Allie Miller's Family in honor of her memory. It is given to a junior rider on the basis of need, ability and desire, and is to be used for riding instructions with a professional trainer. Selection is made by a committee from nominations sent to the office by the VHSA membership.

The Michael Lenehan Scholarship is a $1,000 College Scholarship in memory of Michael Lenehan donated by Mrs. Louisa Lenehan. This scholarship is awarded to a deserving high school senior on the basis of need, scholastic record and participation in the VHSA.

Please send in your letters now to the Virginia Horse Show Association nominating either yourself or someone you know who is worthy of one of these scholarships. Letters are accepted throughout the show year.

St. Andrews Presbyterian College offers scholarships to riding team students. Contact Director, Peggy McElveen.
