USHJA Junior Career Development Program

The purpose of the USHJA Junior Career Development Program is to allow junior riders the opportunity to be an apprentice for a day, onsite, with a competition official, i.e. judge, show manager, show secretary, steward, course designer, vet or farrier (click here for the current list of participating officials). The program allows junior riders an opportunity to have a better understanding of the duties and responsibilities of these officials and to determine if they would like to pursue a career in one of these positions.

The apprenticeship is for 1 day, maximum of 8 hours at a competition near you. Please use the USEF Event Calendar for a future regular member event in your zone. Participants must be USHJA junior members. Juniors/Youth interested in apprenticing with a judge must be between the ages of 18-21. All other apprentice areas are open to juniors between the ages of 14-18.

To participate in the Junior Career Development Program, please review, complete and submit the following three forms to the USHJA office. Please allow two weeks beginning on the date your application is received until the first day of the competition for processing.

Apprentices must have COMPLETED showing before apprenticing with any licensed official or show staff member.

  • Program Application (word) or PDF
  • Apprentice Program Specifications
  • The Release and Indemnification Agreement

Once this information has been received in the USHJA Office, your selected official/competition will be contacted. If both the official and the competition management agree to participate in the program; the apprenticeship will be scheduled.

The USHJA Junior Career Development officials are volunteers that have agreed to dedicate their time and knowledge to the USHJA membership. As professionals, their time and knowledge are valuable commodities. USHJA asks that members who utilize the Junior Career Development Program exhibit the highest level of respect and understanding for the professional volunteer's time.
